Construction and refurbishment of Plabutsch Tunnel
The Plabutsch Tunnel is one of the longest and most modern road tunnels in Europe and is used as a north–south bypass of Graz. The first opening to traffic of the eastern tube with a length of 9.9 km was in 1987. Construction of the west tube became necessary since the traffic volume was increasing continuously. Construction of the 10 km long western tube began parallel to the refurbishment of the east tube in 1999. In addition, both tunnels were equipped with state-of-the-art safety equipment. The project was completed in December 2004.
