Construction and refurbishment of Pfänder Tunnel

The existing first tube of the Pfänder Tunnel (eastern tube) was operated for bi-directional traffic. This represented a jeopardy to smooth traffic in today‘s heavy traffic load. The expansion of the Pfänder Tunnel as a modern, twintube tunnel system was approved to increase the safety of the A14 Rheintal motorway. After the construction of the second tube, the existing first tube was adapted, in order to improve the safety standard of the entire tunnel system.

The Pfänder Tunnel - an impressive construction

This extremely impressive tunnel construction consists of two tubes, each with a length of 6.7 km. The tubes are fully equipped with emergency telephones, electronic equipment as well as fire extinguishing niches and corresponding facilities. The energy and safetyrelated main bases form the operating office south and the operating station north as well as the caverns and the crossway FQ08. The control room Hohenems is responsible for the surveillance of the whole tunnel.
