B 28 – Tunnel Blaubeuren – Refurbishment and safety upgrade according to RABT 2006

After six months of construction, the 325-meter long tunnel at Blaubeuren on the B 28 has been reopened on 06 December 2012.

In addition to the repair of the concrete and the completely renewed inner lining of the lower tunnel walls made of fireproof materials, the modernization of the operational and security systems according to the safety guidelines for the equipment and operation of road tunnels (RABT 2006) was most essential.

The performance of DÜRR included the renewal of the power supply and the wiring, the lighting and lighting control system as well as the view turbidity and CO measuring devices. Furthermore escape route lights and optical leading lights, a walk-in emergency niche, a tunnel radio system and - as the heart of the modernized technology - the new central control system has been newly installed. The latter one is now directly connected to the road maintenance authorities. Not least, a fire alarm system in the operations building, the fire water supply and transportation facilities have been retrofitted.

The total investment for the modernization amounted to 3.4 million EUROS.

During the six months lasting closing period, the inhabitants of Blaubeuren had to experience the important meaning of the tunnel constructed in 1983: all traffic of the B 28 was conducted through downtown during the renovation period. Still, it was worth it: the mayor of Blaubeuren explicitly praised "a substantial plus of security" of the costly renovated building.
